Cigar Sizes
There is an art to cigar smoking, very unlike cigarettes. Do not smoke a cigar as you would a cigarette. Take your time, savor the taste and the aroma of your fine cigar.
If you smoke a cigar too fast, it will overheat. Overheating is not good. You can quickly ruin a cigar by overheating it. The tobacco that has not yet burned will release fumes as the overheated smoke passes and then the flavor characteristics of the cigar changes, normally for the worse. This is very true with flavored cigars.

If you have a “heavy draw” when smoking, it is recommended that you smoke a thicker RG (ring gauge) cigar. Thicker cigars have more surface area which results in a cooler burning cigar, and better flavor.

The below chart shows the many common cigar sizes available. The smaller the number (RG), the thinner the cigar...and the hotter it will burn under a heavy draw. If you want a consistant flavor with minimal aftertaste, look for flavored cigars in the 40+ range!

Cigars come in different lengths and thicknesses, from thick gauge, as much as an inch in diameter, to thin gauge, a slender 1/2 inch. To arrive at an understanding of a cigar diameter divide the ring size by 64, thus a ring size of 64 divided by 64 would be 1 inch in diameter or 32 divided by 64 would be a half inch diameter.

What gauge should I purchase?
Well obviously personal preference is the major criteria, however as a rule of thumb, if your draw is hearty a wider gauge cigar is recommended. A more slender cigar will present with a harsh flavour, as the extra oxygen will cause your cigar to smoulder at a higher temperature. The result will be a lesser appreciation of the nuances of flavour and aroma.
In order to assist you in your selection we have listed brands by cigar size and category. For example under the thick gauge category 'Gran Corona' produced by the Montecristo and Partagas brands.
